Duty cycle ratings are established under controlled ambient temperature conditions — typically around 25–30°C. The rating assumes the display is operating within that thermal envelope. A panel running 16 hours a day in a 16/7 rated display can still fail ahead of its rated lifespan if the ambient temperature surrounding it is 55°C rather than 28°C.

Operating hours and ambient temperature are two separate variables. Both must be within specification. Most buyers check the hours. Almost nobody checks the operating temperature range — until something fails.
